Description

The OEM BMW rear upper control arms can become a limiting factor when trying to lower an E36 and still retain a good level of suspension travel. On the OEM arms the area between the spring and the hub hits the chassis of a low car, limiting ride height/suspension travel.

The slim profile and shape of the HyperBreak Drop Arms allow for a high degree of suspension travel, even when the car is heavily lowered. The arm allows for 90mm more travel at the wheel/hub when compared to the OEM E36 arm and 30mm more than the OEM E46 arm.

With the HyperBreak Drop Arms the area in which the spring sits is lowered by roughly 10mm (this gives the same effect as using a spring that is 10mm shorter). This lowers the rear of the car by 20mm without changing the spring.

The HyperBreak Drop Arms come with shims that allow the user to change the overall length of the arm by 15mm. There are 3 different shims that can be inserted into the arm in 5 different orientations giving the user 5 settings for the overall length of the arm:

  • -7.5mm
  • -3mm
  • 0mm (OEM length)
  • +3mm
  • +7.5mm

This length adjustment gives the user more control over the toe and camber settings for the rear wheels or can be used to dial in wheel fitment.

The arms can be used with or without a rear anti-roll bar (ARB). The only difference with the ARB compatible version is that a short adjustable droplink is included. This droplink features a high quality M10 rod end on one side and a high quality StrongFlex polyurethane bushing on the other. The rod end bolts to the arm with the supplied M8 bolt and the bushing slips onto the ARB in the same way that the OEM droplink does. It is recommended that the droplinks length is set to 75-80mm (hole to hole). The droplinks can be purchased separately if the user later decides they want to run an ARB.

The OEM arms often rub the outer driveshaft boots on heavily lowered cars that are running close to 0° of camber. This often leads to the driveshaft boots splitting which can cause the CV joint to fail prematurely. Our drop arms have plenty of clearance in this area to avoid rubbing, even when the suspension is fully compressed.

The arms can be provided in either a gold zinc plating or in raw steel if you would like to paint/coat them yourself.

The arms are directional (there is a right arm and a left arm). The arms are stamped underneath with an L or and R to denote which side of the car they must be installed on.

Warnings

  • Cannot be used with springs that have an outside diameter larger than 115mm
  • Cannot be used effectively on E46s due to differences in the shape of the chassis/spring seat area. To get a low ride height on E46s I recommend using true rear coilovers and a tubular upper arm. (HyperBreak E46 rear upper arms coming soon)
  • Inner arm bushings not included
  • For off road use only
